Heir to the Throne New Country Guide
Written by Björn Johannessen
One of the oldest known Russian cities, Smolensk is first attested as early as in the
Russian Primary Chronicle of 863 AD. Located on the fault line between the
expansionist Lithuanian Monarchy, and the Grand Duchy of Muscovy, Smolensk over
time came to be a contested prize in the long and ongoing conflict between those two
countries, and was eventually annexed by Lithuania in the early 15th century.
Nizhny Novgorod grew to prominence as one of the Russian cities that had escaped
the initial waves of Mongol invasion, on account of their relative insignificance at the
time, and who then later grew to power in the power vaccuum that followed. Annexed
to Vladimir - Suzdal in 1264, Nizhny Novgorod was later incorporated as an
important city of Muscovy in 1392.
An independent political entitiy between 1010 and 1393, Murom would later, along
with many other similar small independent Russian states, be annexed to the growing
power of Muscovy.
Any Catholic country who controls the Holy Land – the province named Judea in the
Eastern Mediterranean – has the option of reestablishing the old crusader Kingdom of
Jerusalem, assuming the province has also been converted to catholicism. While there
were many titular Kings of Jerusalem throughout history, The Kingdom as a
meaningful geographical entity had ceased to exist by the turn of the 14th century,
and reestablishing it would be a great victory for Christianity.
A historic Duchy of France, as well as of the Holy Roman Empire, Bar is located
north-east of modern day France. A long term strategic interest of both Burgundy and
France, the first objective for anyone playing Bar is survival.
Located in central France, and a French Vassal at that, the Duchy of Berry is a part of
the decentralised French peerage. France will likely be looking to annex the Duchy,
so anyone playing it should first focus on breaking free from French vassalage.
Assuming you can do that, an accomplishment in itself, going on to form France
yourself is pretty much a given, though far from easily accomplished, goal.
The Hanesatic league
The Hanesatic league was an important North German trade league who, during its
heydays in the 14th and 15th centuries, wielded significant military and economic
power along the shores of the Baltic. With its focal point in the North German city of
Lübeck, the Hansa is one of the few countries who start the game as a Merchant
Republic. Bring other nations into your trade league, and watch as the ducats flow
through Lübeck, and into your coffers.
